ANGEL Learning Makes Additional Contribution to Open Source Community

For Immediate Release - Oct.10, 2007

Indianapolis, Ind. – October 10, 2007 – ANGEL® Learning, recognized innovator of enterprise e-learning software and services, today announced an additional contribution of source code to the open source community. The code ANGEL developed tailors open source TiddlyWiki technology to develop wikis for educational purposes. The new open source code is hosted and available for download on http://eduforge.org.

As wikis emerged as powerful tools for educational collaboration, ANGEL Learning evaluated options for incorporating them into the ANGEL Learning Management Suite (LMS), including building a proprietary tool. When ANGEL evaluated the open source TiddlyWiki wiki tool, they found a lightweight, open technology that could be used to develop a wiki specifically for educational purposes. ANGEL development of TiddlyWikki gives users in different educational roles permissions based on those roles. These permissions give instructors the ability to manage the wiki environment by “rolling back” off-topic or inappropriate changes.

“Extending TiddlyWiki to fit the academic model was a natural fit for ANGEL,” said David Mills, chief technology officer, ANGEL Learning. “The flexibility provided by the TiddlyWiki framework allowed us to write Plug-ins and extensions to make it fit the academic model. Its use of client-side technologies like DHTML and JavaScript fit nicely with ANGEL’s vision of a seamless user experience. By developing on an open source platform we are able to give back to the broader educational community.”

This donation of ANGEL Learning source code to the educational community follows the company’s contribution of source code to the IMS GLC Common Cartridge digital content standard in 2006. ANGEL’s contribution of source code to the Common Cartridge effort enabled the standards community to move forward more quickly with the Common Cartridge standard and is making digital learning materials, standardized to enable interoperability and content reuse, more quickly available to the educational community.

The ANGEL LMS is developed as an open, flexible system, and many ANGEL processes and methodologies are modeled after their counterparts in the open source community. The ANGEL approach of blending open source ideals with the accountability, services and dedicated resources of a commercial vendor is unique among LMS developers.
